(4 min read) Mosaic art has been around for thousands of years, captivating art fans with its mesmerizing patterns, colorful tiles, and distinctive method of making. Whether you are standing in a museum and staring in awe at a piece of ancient Roman floor, or having a prosecco at your friend’s house trying to figure out what the mosaic design on her wall means, mosaic art will always grab your attention. In recent years, one particular mosaic art form seems to be becoming more popular than ever, and in this article, we will be diving into its vibrant and dynamic world, the world of abstract mosaic art.

The origins of mosaic art can be traced back to the third millennium BCE, with some of its earliest examples found in Mesopotamia and ancient Greece. Those early mosaics had been used for decorative purposes, so they depicted deities, landscapes, and detailed floral patterns. The mosaic art itself was associated with wealth and grandeur, so mosaics were reserved for the palaces of emperors, homes of the rich, and temples of gods.

The word “mosaic” is derived from the Latin word “musaicum”, fittingly meaning “work of Muses”, so the very name of the mosaic art was a tribute to the deities of art and inspiration. The process of creating a mosaic masterpiece was pretty much the same back then, as it is today. Mosaicists would carefully place tiny pieces of glass, stone, or ceramic to complete a particular image or design. The method itself was often painstakingly slow, but the results were stunning. To this day there is not a single art form that can rival the beauty of a mosaic artwork once the light hits the tiles.

Fast forward to the mid-20th century, and abstract art was slowly but surely spreading its complex tendrils throughout the art world. Unlike everything that was seen before it, abstract art didn’t try to depict reality directly. Instead, it focused on indirectly representing it with color, shape, texture, and form, often completely disregarding traditional methods. Its pioneers Mondrian, Kandinsky, and Pollock were adamant about breaking away from any semblance of conventional art, in order to fully explore emotional expression through various types of abstract forms.

The new emotional and conceptual expression brought a revolutionary shift in the way people perceived and understood art itself. Instead of simply looking at an art piece and seeing a real-life scene or a sensible portrait, people were now encouraged to think about the feeling or idea behind the artwork. Abstract artists used strange shapes and vibrant colors not just to express complex ideas, but to tap into the subconscious of their audience.

Keeping the history of both the mosaic and abstract art, the fusion of the two was only a matter of time. Once the natural progression merged the two, the results were too original and stunning to be overlooked. In abstract mosaics, individual tiles become the building blocks of an emotion or idea, rather than a simple and literal image. Mosaicists use a huge variety of colors, shapes, and textures to explore topics of harmony, chaos, or transformation, as well as to send inconspicuous messages to their audience.

As a result, abstract mosaic art appeals to both the keen mind and the sensitive soul of a respective art lover. The sheer visual impact of the intricately placed vibrant tiles is enough to enthrall the viewer, but it’s the emotional expression and conceptual exploration that make abstract mosaics so captivating. Our catalog features a variety of abstract mosaic artworks that will invite your imagination to explore and experience mosaic art in a whole new way. However, abstract art is so tactile and emotional that it is often personal to both the artist and viewer, so we would be thrilled to recreate any type of abstract expression with a handmade mosaic. Let’s create and appreciate some abstract mosaic stories together.

I love all of these mosaic art pieces. I love to find pretty ones for my home but it’s not a formal home at all and it’s not easy to match my cottagecore design with mosaics.

I can’t think of a better medium for abstract art than mosaics. Their movement and color fits perfectly with the abstract way of approaching art.

The thing I like most about abstract art is how multiple people can look at the same piece an all come away with different views sand interpretations. Abstract mosiac art is a great thought-provoking piece to have in ones home!
