Celebrating Black History Month With Mosaic Art

(4 min read) Every year, in the month of February, people of all colors in the United States celebrate the difficult history and amazing achievements of African Americans. This celebration started back in 1926 with a single week in February, and it continued growing in both time frame, as well as the place of the celebration. Today, thanks to social media, most of the world celebrates the whole month of February as  Black History Month.

Initially, The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History declared the “Negro History Week” as a way to recognize the herculean efforts and contributions of African Americans in the US. Both Frederick Douglass, a brave abolitionist, and former president Abraham Lincoln were born in the second week of February, so that week was determined to be the celebration week. Later on, in 1976, US President Gerald Ford, extended the recognition to a whole month to “honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Black History Month honors all Black people from all eras, from the enslaved people brought over from the African continent in the 17th century to all African Americans living in the US and the rest of the world today. One of the most notable names that is often spotlighted in February is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King courageously fought for equal rights for Black people in the 1950s and 1960s, and his “I Have A Dream” speech is quoted to this day as a symbol of freedom.

Other renowned figures that are often quoted and remembered during this month include Thurgood Marshall, who was the first African-American justice appointed to the United States Supreme Court in 1967; astronaut Mae Jemison, who was the first African-American astronaut to venture to space in 1992; and former president Barack Obama, who was the first-ever elected African-American president of the United States.

However, it is important to note that during the month of February, African-American people are celebrated in all facets of life. We celebrate them simply because they are still here among us, thriving after all the struggles they’ve been through. So whether your goat is Jordan or Lebron, you honor them. Whether your favorite author is Tananarive Due or Jodie Slaughter, celebrate them. Let’s not fight who’s better this month. let’s leave gouging each other’s eyes out for March… Just kidding. But truly, when it comes to Black excellence, we can just stand on the sidelines and admire the Simone Biles-es and Jordan Peele-s of the world.

“A car is not just a mode of transport, it’s a statement of style”, and this mosaic art certainly proves that. Black History Month by Mosaics Lab.

So before you ask, no, it is not “cringe” to give your favorite Black nurse flowers or buy your elderly Black neighbor a new hat for no reason in February. It is not “cringe” to highlight that you are reading solely books by Black authors on Instagram during this month. It is also not “cringe” to listen only to DMX and Bill Withers on Spotify, and casually mention that in a conversation. It is not cringe, we all do what we can. Not because we want to be cool, but because it is necessary to remember.

They say that love sees no color, but we most certainly see all of these stunning hues and love them all. Mosaic Mural Art by Mosaics Lab.

The mosaics featured here are just some of our personal favorites, but there are plenty of African-American feature mosaics artworks to choose from. We can make any mosaic artwork to highlight the sheer beauty and excellence that is so prevalent among Black people all over the world, and we were and will keep doing that whole year long, not just in February.

Disclaimer: Jordan is the goat, but we respect everyone’s opinions, even if they are flat-out, completely and utterly wrong. *wink wink

I can’t think of a more vibrant artform to use to honor black history than mosaics. It’s as multi-faceted as black history and culture itself.
