Gaudí – The Mosaic Genius of Barcelona

(3 min read) It is impossible to be in Barcelona and not notice Antoni Gaudí’s incredible mosaic artworks. Every mosaic design lover owes a lot to this early 20th century modernism architect who brought freshness, originality and genius to the world of art and architecture.

Gaudí decorated his city, Barcelona, using his graphic and whimsical imagination. Some say that his work is a constant search for aesthetic and harmony.  He liked to use colorful mosaics made of small ceramic tiles to create unique patterns on his sculptures.

Trencar Mosaic Technique

Gaudí pioneered a special mosaic design technique called Trencar that is still in vogue and used by a lot of artists today. Trencar, equivalent for “to break” in Catalan, creates mosaic forms and shapes by putting together broken ceramic tiles, plates and cups. It was first used by Gaudí, for decorating the Fincas Güell, the estate of his patron, Eusebi Güell.

Casa Batlló Mosaic Artworks

One of Gaudí’s most visited masterpieces, placed in the Passeig de Gracia, the house he restored a century ago for the Batllo family is with no doubt a fairytale. It lies somewhere between mythology, futurism and archeology. From the street you can see gorgeous trencadis mosaic designs all over the facade, an architectural impressionist painting. The interior is made entirely of blue ceramic fragments of waterfall pours down through the lightwell.

Park Güell Mosaics Designs

The Park Güell is another enchanted place designed by Gaudí: the fairy garden, the Güell Palace and the crypt of the Colonia Güell, would plunge anyone into another world. And more than that the giant salamander at the entrance and the multicolored balcony are just as iconic and will make any mosaic artworks lover fall in love with it at first sight.

Now this is what you call art, so beautiful and should really be appreciated. I used to mosaic art when I was young in art class until the school cancelled the lesson and I was disappointed. Nice to know it never really disappeared.

I have been to Barcelona and admired Gaudi’s work both in Park Guell and around the city. Not to mention Sagrada Familia. He was a great visionary and put Barcelona on the touristic map. There are so many people who visit this city just to see his work of art.
