Love And Mosaic Art
(3 min read) Love has always been an inspiration for artists from all fields of art. From paintings of couples holding hands to sculptures of lovers in the grip of passion, love has been present in art from its inception. However, there is just something special about love in mosaic art. The mere act of carefully matching similar and different pieces of material to create a whole artwork can symbolize love itself.

And don’t worry, if you are not in love, I’ve got you. Valentine’s Day is about celebrating all kinds of love, not just romantic. So if you have a good friend you’d like to make happy, Valentine’s Day is for you. If you have an elderly neighbor who seems lonely, and sometimes you do small things to get them to smile, Valentine’s Day is for you.

If you have a favorite barista whose coffee you’d die for, Valentine’s Day is for you. If you are a huge fan of an NBA star with colorful dreadlocks who hits the giddy all the time (*bombastic side eye to myself), Valentine’s Day is for you. If your family sucks, your boss sucks, you’ve got no friends, and you love just and only your cat, this day is for you too.

Valentine’s Day is for everyone, regardless of what our marketing-driven, consumerism-overwhelmed, tik-tok-infatuated society tells you. As long as you have an ounce of feeling in your heart, Valentine’s Day and mosaic art are for you. Here are some fun facts about Valentine’s Day, with some fabulous mosaic artwork to give them some pizzazz.

Did you know that there are actually two Saint Valentines? One was Saint Valentine of Trent, and the other was Saint Valentine of Rome, and both were martyred. It is still unclear if the holiday is celebrated one or the other. One legend says St. Valentine defied the Roman Emperor by marrying couples in love in secret, while the other one says that he helped Christians escape the Roman prisons when he fell in love with a prison guard’s daughter, to whom he later wrote a letter signing it “From your Valentine”.

Many people don’t know that Valentine’s Day also has its roots in Lupercalia, a fertility festival celebrated between the 13th and 15th of February. The festival celebrated the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus, and the founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. The celebration included animal sacrifices, as well as gently slapping women and crops with goat hides dipped in blood. Let me repeat that, from the skim-readers in the back row, gently slapping women with gat hides dipped in blood. And by “goat”, I don’t mean Jordan or Lebron, and by “gently slapping”, I mean exactly that… And then they say our generation is weird. Sure…

The legend that says you should be especially vigilant on Valentine’s Day, or Cupid might strike you with an arrow, can be traced back to ancient Greece and its god of love, Eros. Eros was depicted as a handsome young man who had the power to make people fall madly in love. Romans later adopted that legend, changing the god’s name to Cupid and depicting it as a small boy with a bow and arrow. If he were to do something like that today, he would probably be arrested, dragged through the public, and fawned over by millions, Luigi Mangione style.

So, you see, everything is a bit weird, kinda like you, and everything looks better with mosaic art, kinda like this article. Not to say that this literary masterpiece wouldn’t work on its own, but it’s simply much better with some glorious mosaic artwork throughout.
