5 Great Cost-effective Bathroom Flooring Ideas

(5 min read) In most rooms, in your home choosing proper flooring comes down to appearance. You want your living room floor to look great while you chill with your loved ones watching TV. You want your dining room floor to look elegant and dazzle your dinner guests during the holidays. You want your office floor to look stunning, so your clients know you are meticulous and stylish. Performance, although important, comes in second to looks. Accept in your bathroom. With the bathroom, the rules change.

The main difference between bathroom floors and the floors of other rooms is that bathroom flooring needs to be waterproof. Even if you are the tidiest person on earth, your bathroom floor is bound to come into contact with water. Water splashes from the sink on a daily basis, steam from the shower usually ends up misting the entire bathroom, toilets can overflow for a number of reasons, etc. So when choosing the flooring for your bathroom you should consider how it will perform under the stress first, and how it will look second.

Luckily, these two don’t have to be separate, as there are many types of flooring put there that will satisfy both of those needs. Today you can choose from a variety of gorgeous and functional waterproof floors, and in this article, we will mention the top five most popular choices for you to consider when you decide to renovate your bathroom.

Natural Stone

So let’s start with the fanciest option. Natural stone is great if you’re loaded with cash, and itching to get rid of it asap. It is very expensive, but it is also very durable, hard, and aesthetically pleasing. Basically, it looks great. For a while. At least during that first post-installation year, and if you are lucky it might end up looking good for a couple more. However, natural stone, such as marble, granite, and limestone tends to have some serious moisture problems over time. It can also be cold and very slippery, so you might wanna consider some other option if you have small children.

Regular Ceramic Or Porcelain Tiles

There is a reason why ceramic or porcelain tiles are a classic when it comes to bathroom flooring. They are waterproof and inexpensive and they tend to look great depending on the style you opt for. Today you can even go for the tiles that mimic some pricier flooring options, like natural stone or hardwood. Otherwise, regular ceramic or porcelain tiles tend to look sterile, they are hard, so they are difficult to stand on for prolonged periods of time and they are very slippery, so think bathroom floor mats.

Engineered Wood

This particular type of wood is better than solid wood simply because it is more stable under highly moist conditions. Unlike regular wood, engineered wood has a plywood base that holds exceptionally well against moisture. Also, if you are adamant about having wood in your bathroom, then engineered wood is truly the best choice. There are two downsides to engineered wood. The first one is that the over-sanding can damage and go through the veneer, as well as the overall cost. The second one, but not any less important, is the overall cost of the flooring, which is quite expensive.

Vinyl

Supremely functional and good-looking, vinyl flooring is my second favorite on this list. It has been highly popular for decades, especially as a solution for bathrooms where huge amounts of water are used daily, such as children’s bathrooms and laundry rooms. Vinyl is also great if you don’t want to pay extra for installations. The sheets are extremely easy to apply, so vinyl is great for a do-it-yourself job. The only downside to vinyl flooring is that bumps and gaps from the underlayer will often transfer to the vinyl surface because it is quite thin and elastic.

Mosaic Tile

Mosaic tile is my favorite, top of notch, simply the best flooring solution for your and any other bathroom. It offers you the best of both worlds when it comes to bathroom flooring. A well-done mosaic floor has a rich and textured feeling, it is durable and it looks like a piece of art. Because there is a huge variety of different mosaic tiles out there, you can achieve exactly the look you want. You can opt for textured mosaic tiles to solve the problem of slippery wet surfaces, and you can also add radiant or heated tiles underneath for warmer flooring. Unlike bigger tiles, mosaic tiles are easy to change if they get chipped. They are tiny, so the change won’t be noticeable at all.

Outro…or Cork?…Cork it is.

Instead of doing my usual witty outro at this point, I’d rather place an honorable mention here — cork flooring. Cork flooring is rather affordable, it is comfy underfoot, and, most importantly, it is waterproof. It has some downsides, just like every other flooring. However, it is perfect if you care about sustainability, but are unable to pay for mosaic flooring at the moment.

When we picked bathroom flooring the main thing was that they would be easy to clean, and waterproof. So we opted for wood affect tiles x

I didn’t even know you could use wood in bathrooms given the moisture level but I love the look for it. All of these washrooms look beautiful and unique esp the mosaic tiling.

Bathrooms are typically smaller rooms than most other spaces, and thus the choice of flooring material can have less budget impact than it does for more spacious rooms. But still we need these cheap flooring ideas.

Natural stone tiles are so popular for bathrooms! I remember one house I rented had carpet, and it was always so grubby. Tiles and moasics are the way to go.
