Color Blocking With Mosaic Art

(4 min read) If you are following any of the numerous fashion trends currently rocking the scene, chances are you’ve probably heard of color blocking. You probably have a hoodie or two with opposing bold colors, sneakers featuring some electric tones, or a vase that simply draws the eye as soon as you walk into the room. If this is the case, you, like most people, are discreet fans of color-blocking.

Color-blocking is defined as mixing two or three contradictory colors in one exciting and statement-making ensemble. It is a widespread misinformation that the trend itself originated from Yves Saint Laurent back in the 1960s when the fashion brand debuted the now iconic sack dress. However, many people don’t know that the dress itself was inspired by the wonderful artwork of Dutch painter, Piet Mondrian.

Piet Mondrian was one of the pioneers of abstract art during the 20th century. He was so progressive with his abstract art, that he eventually reached a point where he solely used geometric elements, three primary colors, and three primary values to express himself. Those three colors were, red blue, and yellow, while the three values were black, white, and grey. That was the beginning of the trend we now know as color-blocking.

I have never thought of color blocking with mosaics but I actually appreciate it more with the breaking down of it in the tiling. I especially love the example shown with the Eiffel Tower piece.

Some types are more easily identifiable as colorblocking than others. I remember when colorblocking was huge in fashion. I owned several pieces at the time, myself. 🙂 It’s fun to see how design and colors can make a difference in many things, including mosaic art (and fashion).
