A small space doesn’t necessarily mean a crowded space.

1. Scaling

The visual size of furniture in relation to one another is of utmost importance when you are dealing with a small space. Avoid oversized pieces that will eat up the floor. We know those chunky, cozy are mighty attractive when you want to chill after a hard day’s work, but they will make your room look like a crowded maze of unnecessary things. Go for medium to small size pieces. Plushy but small sofas, skinny chairs, narrow coffee tables, etc.

2. Zoning

In small homes, some rooms usually perform several functions For example, your living room may also serve as a dining room. To make sure it looks more orderly, you can use different-sized area carpets to create zones for each of those functions. that way your space will look well designed and cohesive.

3. Use your windows wisely

The extra light will always make a space appear larger. The eye of the observer will always drawn by the light, so if you have a large bright window the eye will naturally incorporate that view of the outdoors as part of your room. If you want to make full use of that effect, leave your windows bare and install skinny shades or simple blinds for some privacy.

You can’t go wrong with a huge window in a small room.

4. Curves are in

Curved elements in a small room will create a sense of harmony. Straight lines and rigid corners will visually chop down an already tiny space, making it look too sturdy and disordered. Choose round furniture with soft edges to create an organic feel and an inviting and hospitable space.

5. Narrow down your color palette

Just like large furniture can make the room look crowded, a variety of colors can make it look chaotic. Instead of going for various colors, select a few favorites and stick with them. The colors will add character without overtaking the room or making it look messy. On the same note, you should avoid creating too many contrasts as they disrupt the flow of the room, enticing the eye to stop and focus on them instead of taking in the whole space.

Don’t oversaturate your small space with colors, pick two or three and stick with them.

6. Put walls to good use

Bathrooms and kitchens often end up being the smallest rooms in a small home, so make sure you use them to their full extent. That means your walls shouldn’t be just blank spaces with some lovely artwork. Utilize them by installing floating shelves and use them as both storage and display space.

Make sure your walls are tastefully used to their fullest extent.

7. Mirror, mirror on the wall

Disney’s Snow White will probably flop at the box office, but that doesn’t mean the mirrors are out. In a small room mirrors will visually add more light and make it appear more spacious and open. Don’t be shy with the mirror sizes either. Go big, choose unusual shapes or frames. You can’t go wrong with a mirror in a small room.

I love the idea of zoning. That’s a great way to make as much use of limited space as possible without it feeling cluttered.

We were working with a small space so created zones. Downstairs is open plan – so we have created a zone for relaxing, one for working and another for eating.

Having mirrors strategically placed can work very well. We zone our living room to create a living area and a separate dining area.

We have a small space so I painted the wall a lighter shade of gray. It’s now light and airy over here. I added mirrors, too.

I agree with you about maximizing our wall space. We have adequate shelves at home and I am really happy how functional they are without consuming a lot of space at home. 🙂
