Mosaic art becomes a space odyssey in its own right
(4 min read) I was browsing through world-news yesterday and I ran into this amazing article about the Hubble Legacy Field Mosaic. Although the title is pretty self-explanatory, let me enlighten you nevertheless. The Hubble Telescope Mosaic is assembled of about 7,500 images of the universe “far, far away” (wassup Star Wars fans), which makes it the biggest and most extensive historical encyclopedia of galaxies ever created. This epic mosaic combines observations collected from whopping sixteen years of Hubble Space Telescope deep field surveys, covering over 13.3 billion years of history of our own beloved universe. Now let me say it one more time in case you missed it – IT IS A MOSAIC. Mmm-hm. It made me instantly and overwhelmingly proud to be a part of this terrific community that celebrates the beauty and all-inclusive nature of mosaic art.
On the same note, the word “mosaic” seems to be incorporated into all pores of both society and business. From Mosaic Frozen Food company to awesome and trendy DC’s Mosaic District, our favorite art-form seems to be everywhere and anywhere. That got me thinking, can it really be everywhere? At least one mosaic in every room, how awesome would that be?! So, let’s tackle that idea, as we celebrate the fact that mosaic art managed to grasp a piece of the universe. (Insert victory dance gif here).
Needless to say, a mosaic can indeed be featured in any room in your home. You can decorate your furniture with it, your wall, bathroom furnishings, floors, etc. However, whenever I think of a mosaic in the living room, I simply imagine it on the wall. A huge mosaic on the living room wall just speaks “classy” to me. Whether you decide to go with an artsy one that will show something abstract and meaningful, or for a monochrome one that will simply cover the whole wall, you can’t go wrong with mosaic designs.
As for the kitchen, the obvious choice is always an effective backsplash. Aside from being gorgeous, kitchen backsplashes are also the most practical thing you can add to your kitchen. They are easy to clean, and they don’t require any special care from your part. When it comes to designs, you can choose virtually whatever you like. Whether you choose a design that will create contrast or the one that will fit in with the rest of your kitchen, you can’t go wrong with a kitchen backsplash.
When it comes to the bathroom, nothing speaks “I’m THAT elegant” quite like a wall decorated with mosaic tiles. Just one mosaic wall would do to your bathroom what Kandinsky’s “Composition V” does to Ronald Lauder’s Neue Galerie. Some folks opt for simple mosaic patterns featuring shiny borders and chic stuff like that. I, myself am quite sarcastic, but few things make me so bubbly like a huge flowery mosaic on a bathroom wall.
A bedroom is where the magic happens if you’re lucky. If not, you might wanna consider doing a mosaic on one of the walls, some say it will do wonders for your sex life. It doesn’t even have to be the whole wall. You can opt for a flashy mosaic canvas or a pop-art mosaic dresser. If, however, you do decide to go for a whole wall, I strongly advise discreet and neutral colors and patterns, otherwise, it might look tacky.
Last, but not least, you have probably noticed I haven’t mentioned floor mosaics, and that is simply because I feel that they mostly belong in a hallway. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen mosaics on floors of a variety of living rooms and bedrooms, not to mention bathrooms. However, I personally always felt that the hallway is that one place where floor mosaic can shine and contribute the most. Once you have a wholesome mosaic artwork on your hallway floor, you don’t need any kind of wall decoration to make a proper first impression on your visitors.
Now that we’ve wrapped that up some of you may say. “But what about my nursery, or my children’s bedroom, or my play-room?” You know what? Go for it! Mosaics belong everywhere and they can depict anything, whether it’s a Disney princess or thousands of galaxies
