How to easily achieve an eclectic home interior style
(4 min read) A couple of days ago I ran into my stuck-up neighbor on the street and to avoid her questioning me, I asked “wassup”, which turned out to be a huge mistake. It was literally like turning on your lawnmower! Nothing could stop her yammering about how she hired an EXPENSIVE professional to redesign her interior into an “eclectic it-spot” (her words, not mine). After I got to work and had, at that point a very necessary Advil, I started thinking, is an eclectic home interior really that special? And if so, is it really that hard to achieve that you needed to hire a professional?

According to our trusty buddy Wikipedia, the term “eclectic” stands for: deriving ideas, style, or taste from a broad and diverse range of sources. The urban dictionary states that the word “eclectic” describes a combination of many different individual elements of styles, themes, mediums or inspirations pooled from many sources.” Sooo, eclectic is actually a mishmash of a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but it sounds boujee? Seems so. On the same note, we all like being a little bit boujee here and there. After all, this is the era of James Charles and Cardi B (wink wink).

Needless to say, if eclectic is what you’re going for and you keep those clean lines and sense of surprise in mind, then decorating your home interior in eclectic style shouldn’t be a problem. Achieving eclecticism is actually very easy since we are all by nature a bit eclectic. We all like a little bit of this and a little bit of that mixed together in a bold, but tasteful manner and that is exactly what eclectic style is. However, if you are a bragging sack of sunflowers and rose petals like my neighbor, you can always waste your money and have a designer do it for you.

Creative Consistency
When it comes to some valuable pointers you should follow when going for eclectic interior, the first and the biggest rule is: Go for it! It is your space so of course you should include the things you love, the trick is to make it look vibrant and eye-catching, but not overbearing. It might sound simple, but if you go into it too enthusiastically it could backfire. For example, once you’ve decided on the favorite textures, use them all, but don’t forget to use one multiple time. That way you will create an illusion of a creative consistency, but the space will still look as eclectic as possible.

Colors
Same goes for colors. Use a variety of colors, but make sure to pick just one that will support the overall layout of the space. For example, if you are a photography buff, hang all of your photos on one wall, but make sure that the wall matches the rug in front of it or the color of the dresser. It is very easy to get caught up in a variety of favorite things, colors and, textures, but it is important to have one or two items that will play the role of home accents and visually hold everything together.

Focal Points
On the same note, don’t forget to decide on one focal point. The eclectic style does combine design-periods and styles through a variety of different items, but the curated visuals shouldn’t lack focus. The expression “focal point” may sound vague, but for a good reason. A focal point could basically be anything you decide to accentuate, from a table lamp with a quirky abat jour to an open Tudor fireplace. If you are creating a layout from scratch you can also go for a completely new focal point, rather than accentuating something existing.

Have Fun With it
Last but not least, don’t be a stuck up. Being reserved and taking yourself seriously is the worst thing you can do when attempting to create an eclectic interior. Go for something new and add a completely mismatchy splash of color here and there. Come to think of it, that is probably why my neighbor hired a professional…

I love these looks! I’m all for the eclectic styles–they seem to be the most fun with color.
You say easily however, in this house, it’s hard to make anything look classy for some reason, hahahahaha! It’s cause we have TOO MUCH STUFF!
Eclectic is not quite my style, but I like looking at it! I feel like, if you had to hire someone, you aren’t doing eclectic right. It should be a representation of that person.
I love the eclectic styles but everything in my house is very traditional. Maybe on my next house we should adopt one of this styles.
I love the combination of blue and black and white chair. I have a sitting room, it’s empty lol, and you give me great inspiration.
I love this so much. My home style is rustic/modern but I try really hard to put an eclectic touch to it. I definitely need some more color though!
Colors play an important part in decorating. I am not a daring person so I always stay with white or creamy white for the interior.
These interior style are so cool! For me colors are super important, I love playing with them.
Never, ever, ever ask someone “Wassup” unless you are prepared for them to answer (LOL!).
Some great design ideas, and beautiful rooms! Well done.
Love these looks. I am inspired to go eclectic in my apartment’s style, colors, and designs now!
You say eclectic, but I always think bohemian funk. It’s one of my favorite ways to design. I love being creative and I think that the home decor should mimic that!
I’m glad more people are on board with eclectic styles as home that are too themed and matchy rarely feel comfortable and homey to me. That said, it should be about YOU and it’s weird that she hired someone to basically dictate her preferences.
I’ve been inspired to remodel my home and do have a style like this! I am inspired! Great creativity that went into this!
I will be honest, it’s really easy to caught up in so many things. Like colors, texture, styles, etc. One thing I learned that important to have one or two items that will play the role of home accents and visually hold everything together. I’m a simple person and try not to mix too many things at once!
There is something warm and inviting about these homes. I would love for mine to be styled off of these.
When done well, I love an eclectic look. It’s such a fun way to showcase different styles.
Great post! I love the splash of colors, but I’m not totally into eclectic decorations. I definitely want to add more color to my house. Thanks for the tips!
I feel like eclectic should mean not overly styled. It should be a reflection of all the things you love, whether they are from the same century or design theme.
The photos in your post all show amazing looking rooms. In my home, I just decorate it the way I like it. I don’t go for any particular theme or style.
These interior styles are great! Colors are so important, they give the kick.
Great ideas! I love to use a variety of colors. It’s good to know that it’s important to pick just one color that will support the overall layout of the space.
I love pops of color, pretty photos and unique accents. The hardest thing about decorating is arranging all the things. You have to achieve balance and coordinate things that are similar colors with contrasting hues, etc. Thanks for your inspiration! I’m decorating my living room right now!
Wow I am loving each and every one of these home decor and style! So beautiful.
I give such props to people that can mix and match bold colors and textures like the rooms in this post! It looks so great but is so hard to achieve! Thanks for the inspiration!
I loved reading your blog it was so entertaining lol. Thank you for the tips on how to create the space.
The sunny eclectic living room is my favorite, great inspiration for nailing this interior design style.
These are really good tips. I wouldn’t know where to start to have an eclectic house that didn’t look like a horrific mess. The focal point especially felt like an excellent point.
I love clean lines and pops of colors in a room! Great tips here!
It’s not a style that I would normally go for but I do love looking at eclectic interior style inspirations! It’s not easy to achieve but once you get the hang of it, it just flows naturally!
I am definitely have fun with it when it comes to design. If I don’t love the piece it’s not going in my house!
Yes, all these homes are eclectic and how I wish I’ve got one of them.
I love the eclectic look! It’s unique and interesting. I love playing around with color too. Great inspiration here!
some of those rooms are great, others a little too much stuff on them, I guess I like the colors but would have it simple without too many things
I love all of these tips. I am hopefully purchasing my first home soon so I am glad i found this.
Wow you really showcased some incredible designs! I know some people who are in the less-is-more field but I love how you’ve combined so many unique looks to make it look stunning.
Eclectic is such a fun style. I think mine is definitely in this category.
I love these styles! I’ve always admired eclectic designs and decor…the pops of color really work so nicely together…I’m feeling inspired to add more color to my room now.
I’ve always thought eclectic to mean something visually funky, and not in the good sense. This post changed my mind! I love the photos that were included. They’re super creative and inspiring.
The only thing I love about an eclectic style is the social design of the layout. It’s all about major seating areas with creative style. After that I am not feeling anything about it. It gives me clutter and just a whole bunch of blends that look like old and new. My personal faves from the images posted are the sunny, colorful and vibrant layouts. I
These are all lovely! I wish I am good at interior styling so I can have a living room like this! So pretty!
All these living rooms look so beautiful. I love the style x
I love the looks in the post — I didn’t know that was eclectic. I have little decor imagination so I would need some assistance to redo our home!
I really love farmhouse style with focal walls. I also like light colors with dark accents.
Those designs are sooo cool! It take boldness to implement but I love them!!!
I love the decor in these photos. I am going to bookmark this so that I can use it for a reference for when I decorate my home.
You know what? I am torn between minimalist and electic. I love knicknacks and curios. But because we live in the city where it’s dusty, I go for minimalist now. Nice ideas though.
To each her own. I love some elements from this style, but would not go with it. For those who pursue it – what a great post!
I do agree having fun with the design is the most important, throw in some fun ideas and theme to make it more interesting and unique.
Omg so many super chic looks!!! I would love anyone one of these rooms in my home
I love home decor with colors — lots of it! Makes me feel like I get to know more about those who live in their home when I see lots of colors and decor.
Amazinf interiors and layout. One needs to have this made for. This is quite the real deal when it comes to style. I Stan for this. So nice i love it already.
I hope you have forwarded your stunning blog post to your neighbour as all your suggestions are totally spot on and I am in love with the style and colour choices in these photos
This is so truly beautiful. I love how you combined the elements. I am inspired
First time for me to hear about electric design and wow, these looks are so beautiful and I would love to try something like this in our home.
I am truly loving the look of many of these fabulous rooms and their styles. I love the rich colors and everything looks amazing put together.
I so love the play of colors and Textures. I find myself living in that kind of place given my love for happiness and play of colors.
I love all of this information and they are so simple and easy to do! Thank you.
Wow! I l learned so much reading your post! Actually makes me want to redecorate my entire space.
“A bragging sack of sunflowers and rose petals” that had me laughing. You are a very fun writer and this post made me realize that I like decorating my home eclectically (read: I have a giant pig painting on my living room wall).
I really like this eclectic look! I’m working on redecorating our main living space something like this!
I tend to favor eclectic styles. I just collect individual pieces I adore. Thankfully, what I adore is pretty focused so the pieces typically go together. I love these images you’ve shared as inspiration and guidance. Because purposefully eclectic isn’t always totally random!
We have an eclectic-traditional style home and I love it. Great home decorating inspiration here!
These are so simple and fun!
Those interior style looks amazing! We just moved so maybe I can try this out if it suits or not. Thanks for the amazing tips and it was quite helpful.
Love all the built-ins in some of the photos! Really agree though with the creative consistency tip. Without that, your great ideas can collectively not work together. So important.
It was so much fun scrolling down enjoying all the different looks. I think I’m an eclectic person because I see a lot of things I like. Especially the ones with bold and bright colors.
An eclectic theme is so vibrant and I would love the sunny theme if I went eclectic, for a really spacious room too. Normally, I’m the minimalist type even when it comes to colors and themes.
These ideas are so lovely and creative! I I will need a renovation soon!
I’d love to be easily able to make my house look elegant and refined but no matter what I do it falls flat lol! I do try to add colours though along side whites, grays and deep blues.
I absolutely love the living room. It looks homey and elegant. The colors are adorable and lively.
I never really considered the eclectic style to be anything worth giving a second thought. BUT, with what you have shown here, an eclectic style can actually be quite stylish. There’s even a homey/ comfort feeling in the rooms you showcased which is always desired!
