Dos And Don’ts of Personalizing Your Space

(5 min read) Whether you’ve just bought or rented your new home, or you simply want to breathe some new life into your good ole lil raggedy abode, personalizing your space is an exciting way to revitalize your house and elevate your daily state of mind. Any sort of personal item in your home should be carefully added, as its main purpose is to serve you, either practically or spiritually.

Infusing your style into your living space should be simple enough, but those of us who tried know that it can be quite tricky in actuality. Once you start personalizing and adding knick-knacks that showcase your either gloomy or fluffy side, it is easy to get carried away and go tacky all the way. Here are a few tips and tricks you should follow to avoid turning your home into a frumpy mess.

Personalization can lead to some fun and fulfilling results.

Clutter vs. Clean slate

Instead of adding items that have that “me, myself, and I” vibe to them into your already designed and decorated space, make sure you start from scratch. Get rid of everything that is unnecessary and dated, and then take a good look at your space. If your space looks kinda sad and empty, you’re on a good track. Chances are the furnishing is still there and maybe some shelves, so you can let your inner style icon run loose. Once you’ve decluttered your space, you’ll feel amazing and ready to focus on new ways to update and decorate.

Don’t let the walls wait

Once you’ve gotten rid of all of the clutter, you may feel compelled to start your personalization journey from the furniture, but that would be a wrong move. You would just end up creating another jumbly-looking room. Interior design styles come and go, but displaying your favorite art on the walls remains. Instead of immediately piling up new decor on your shelves, deck the walls first. On the same note, if you like changing your design and decor several times a year, avoid drilling holes. Go for something that won’t permanently damage your wall. Additions such as picture rail molding, cork walls, or command strips and hooks are always a good solution.

“One touch of nature makes the whole world kin”

Yes, we started off with a quote from Shakespeare, and he definitely knew what he was talking about. Whether you were born with a green thumb, or without it, one thing is certain — plants will do miracles for your space. If you are afraid of committing involuntary plant slaughter, there is plenty of greenery that doesn’t require virtually any maintenance to thrive indoors. Any type of greenery will reduce stress and instantly improve your air quality, allowing you to personalize the rest of your space exactly how you like it.

Lighten up!

Try to get as much natural light as you can. Even if you are a fan of heavy drapes and embroidered curtains, avoid adding them until your decorating job is done. Instead, go for plenty of natural light that will help you see your space and its potential clearly. If however, your space lacks natural light, there is a huge array of lighting layouts to choose from. Wall scones, funky table lamps, versatile pendant lights, and stunning chandeliers — the options are endless.

Color me personal

Painting anything from your shelves to your walls is relatively quick and low-cost, and it will do a lot for establishing your personality and infusing it into your space. Any sort of new color will immediately freshen up your home and create a sense of a new beginning. Professionals say that fresh paint is the most effective change you can make to any interior because it has the power to impact both your decision-making skills, your daily routine, and your creativity. Home renovation experts say that you start by picking three colors from your favorite home items, and use them to select samples at the paint store.

Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun! Making your space more personal should be enjoyable and freeing, so make sure your imagination and creativity are fully unleashed.

Those are some great points to keep in mind especially when renovating and personalizing the area you are working on. My common problem is cluttering the space which I need to work on more.

I’ve been planning to redesign my space but I’m always having a hard time starting from scratch. I always end up buying stuff and adding them to what I already have which turn out to be more clutter.
