Creating A Chic And Cozy Family Room
(3 min read) We’ve already determined that this year is all about comfort. It seems as if all of the design styles out there are slightly changing to accommodate that. Industrial is getting some softer fabrics, traditional is putting on some more colorful makeup, rustic is getting a facelift with some rounder lines, and minimalism is on life support (as it should be).

In all that quiet hustle, with Lana singing about Judah Smit in the background, living rooms are coming to terms with the ever-growing popularity of family rooms. It’s tough for them, you have to understand. They’ve ruled the kingdom of home design for ages, just to be replaced with a fresh-faced, curvier model. Not to mention they look so alike…

All jokes aside, people often think that living rooms and family rooms are pretty much the same room, which is simply not true. Living rooms are more formal by nature, and when guests arrive that is usually where they will chill and relax. Family rooms, on the other side, are exactly that – a place for the family to cozy up. Unlike living rooms, family rooms are more eclectic, showing off the personality of every family member. In the traditional interior design sense, a living room serves as a place for formal entertaining, while a family room is a more comfortable space for everyday gatherings and relaxation.

Considering that family rooms have a casual reputation, they should be designed and decorated with that relaxed mentality in mind. Now let’s chat about some key elements to consider when decorating the family room.
Casual Layout
Open floor plan is ideal for a family room. The spacious layout will allow your kids to act like kids, and you and your partner to rest. The bigger the room, the better the vibe. If you don’t have much space in your home, you can always solve that problem with modular furniture, which will allow you flexibility in both layout and use.

Natural light
Family rooms nurture a very comfy and inviting vibe, so lots of natural light is always good to go with the narrative. Huge windows with white or wooden frames and soft-toned curtains would be terrific for a family room. This doesn’t mean that if your windows have that industrial, edgy design you can’t have a family room. You can always create a contrast with the rest of your design, or you can add plush drapes to cover them. However, natural light should be there to set the tone for the rest of your space.

Furniture
We already emphasized the importance of coziness for a family room, and that especially relates to furniture. Furniture doesn’t have to be muted in color. If you are a fan of strong and vibrant colors you should go for that. However, it has to be soft and comfortable. Fluffy-looking sofas, homey recliners, snug ottomans with lots of cushions. The possibilities are endless here, and as long as you feel comfortable you can’t go wrong. For a coffee table, choose a bigger version, so none of your family members feel left out. Go for white color or washed wood, and try to avoid darker tones and glass, because those types of coffee table designs are more suitable for living rooms and parlors.

Open shelves
Open shelves and maximalism are all the rage this year, and that fits perfectly well for family rooms. The point of open shelves is to hold some necessary items, without overbearing the space. For example, add your current reads there, but not your whole library. Your children’s favorite toys and board games are always a good choice, as well as some family photos and decorative trinkets from your fondest trips and adventures.

Don’t forget the carpet!
While the floor in your living room can be bare, the floor in your family has to have a carpet or a couple of smaller rugs. This will create a warm atmosphere, and your kids will be able to play on the floor. Once again, you should avoid dark colors, but you should also avoid gentle fabrics which are usually easy to stain and damage. Family room should be a place of leisure, so you don’t want to constantly worry about your carpet being clean.

There isn’t really a unique plan you should follow when creating your family room, but these are some simple basics. Your family room should be exactly that, your own. It should perfectly accommodate all of your family members and show off all of their personalities and quirks. Decorate your family room together and don’t forget to have fun!

Love all those ideas. They are all pretty and cozy indeed. Love the room with the white couch most especially.
We do have the option to have both at some stage in the future. A more formal one that will be kept clean and clutter free and then the one we sit and relax in
I’d opt for rugs over than a carpet in a family room. They can make the room cosier and more inviting.
