4 Essential Decor Elements to Every Room
(4 min read) See, as much as I’d like to start this post with “I was visiting so and so the other day blah blah blah”, I can’t do that with a clear conscience. First of all, we all know it would be a blatant lie because the world is quarantining and secondly, it would send a bad message to everyone out there who are trying their best not to leave their homes. On the same note, I figure this type of post will do us some good, because we are bound to get sick of our home interiors at this point, so some renovations will be in order once all of this is over.
So, I was working on answering some Quora questions the other day and this particular one really piqued my interest: What are the important components of a great room? Of course, at first, I wanted to argue that the answer depends on the type of room. There’s a huge difference between the important components of bedrooms and those of a living room. Keeping that in mind, that answer would be quite valid. But, me being me and not wanting to let things go, I started thinking… The question itself sounds like it demands a universal answer, not a divisive one. Soooo, what are some universal components?
1. Symmetry
The human eye loves proportion and symmetry in faces and physical objects. I mean, just look at Harry Styles! Am I right? Rooms are no exceptions. That basically means that all of the furniture, decor, and art pieces should be in perfect harmony in every part of the room. Having too many objects on one side of the room and empty space on the other, will disrupt its harmony and make it look less hospitable and inviting.
2. Light
The lighting solution is of the utmost importance for any space. If a room is beautifully designed but it has poor lighting, all of the effort invested in its design and decoration will remain virtually unnoticed. Kinda like an average Instagram model without the humongous lips. If she doesn’t have any, is she really and Instagram model? It’s the same with the lighting. Lighting can make or break a room. Too bright lighting can give a room artificial quality and make it look “plastic” and hostile. Lighting solutions should be added carefully and they are best applied when done by a professional.
3. Color
We’ve talked about the importance of color in home-interior several times in this blog and although the approaches have been different in each post, the advice is always pretty much the same. Unlike trends and styles, the science of color isn’t ever-changing, and while you can experiment and apply different colors to different spaces, you should keep the psychology of each color in mind. For example, red entices appetite, orange is great for enhancing creativity and enthusiasm.
4. Art
Every room should have a focal point and that focal point should be an art piece. Just like with every other thing, it is important to not overdo it. Too much art can make your room look tacky. it is best to choose just one piece that is interesting enough to draw attention without looking imposing. Mosaic artwork will do an impeccable job as a focal point of any type of room. Depending on the size of the room you can opt for anything from intricate details and subdued colors to vibrant tones and simplistic design. Mosaic artwork will never fail to capture the attention of visitors, so you can’t go wrong with mosaic art. Well… I dunno if Kevin Bacon mosaic made of bacon would go well above your bed, but… You know what, scratch that. Whatever floats your boat! Who am I to judge …

Yes to number 2! Lots of natural light is KEY to making a room feel bigger and cleaner!
I fully agree with the ‘light’ that you mentioned! I have moved house a lot, and I have noticed that my favourite houses have all had a lot of natural light coming in! Brilliant post by the way.
Light and color are big ones from me. There are many rooms I want to re-do if we get the extra funds. Luckily most of them do have the light! I just need more color.

For me, light and symmetry are most important. Or, at least, a room needs to feel balanced if not symmetrical. But having a lot of natural light during the day and low mood lighting at night makes a room so comfortable.
We have a friend who’s a professional decorator who did our house when we moved in 2 years ago. He’s all about symmetry but breaking it too, you know? Like a nice piece to break the monotony. But everything still has to tie together.

This is a great list! I think these are all things we can appreciate in a space. I especially find that I love lighting! Light fixtures are such a fun and functional way to dress up a room.
I like all ideas, although unfortunately few would match my house, for this I would like to start again from scratch and follow only my taste. ^_^

I think I have all of the first 3 elements but I am lacking on the last one. I’ll think about art and where it can be placed. So, that’s the missing element.

Great points! Lighting is HUGE for me, especially natural light. I’m an outdoors loving person and have no desire to feel like I’m stuck indoors away from the natural environment around us. That’s why I’m so drawn to rooms with big windows.

I’m with you on everything in this post. Love symmetry, and I’m in the Caribbean, so I neeedsss me the natural light. Great points to consider when arranging or re-arranging a room. You are so right that with all this time stuck at home, it’s especially important that the rooms feel right. I spent almost 2 hours this morning re-arranging furniture instead of working. In the end everything pretty much went back into the same spot – but all the dust was gone. And now reading your article, I realize that the problem with that room is lighting. It’s an in-between room without any windows. Thank you for the insight!

A lack of light in a room is such a drag! I love bright natural light. It does everything to give me a mood boost, plus my house plants love it!

I like the symmetry principle in home decoration because it will give balance when it comes to your furniture pieces, the arrangement and all.
For me light is the only thing I really need in my living room. everything else is not necessary. for example my entire house is monochrome and feel comfortable with it and don’t even think of changes (I have to admit that a year ago we added some wood into the living room though)
In all honesty, I can’t live in a dark space, it makes me sad and gloomy.

Great interior design post. All really important aspects of a home. For me, light is probably the most important, especially since my home is kind of dark. If we ever move, it will be in a home that has tons of windows and natural light. And the art is what makes a home personal. Love, love, love the mosaics featured here. They would make such a stunning statement in a home.

I think those 4 elements are the top 4 things to consider when designing your space. I personally appreciate a house with good lighting and you’re right, what’s the use of a perfectly decorated house if you have poor lighting quality.
