Autumn is often described as a moody season, but not in a tedious way, more like a Cillian Murphy meme kind of moody. Cute and cozy, but with a dash of stormy weather in the forecast. One of the design elements that reflects that contrast perfectly is the limitless pattern play of the materials. It is the best and quickest way to embrace that contrast between the crisp outdoors and the cushioned indoors. Furthermore, patterns instantly bring life into every space, infusing it with character and giving it dimension and depth. Patterns give your home a feeling of sanctuary all of us crave during the chilly autumn days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the best ways to successfully introduce patterns to your home is through layering. Think of a neutral-toned foundation, like a beige sofa or a muted green bedspread, and build upwards from there. Go for garter or stockinette-stitched wool throw blankets patterned in plaids or simple color blocks. Lastly, toss in fluffy cushions with botanical motifs or geometrical patterns. This type of layering creates the effect of both perceived depth and physical warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The third rule of the pattern club is that nothing should match in the pattern club. (I thought of that one all by myself, you’re welcome.) My lame Fight Club joke aside, patterns really shouldn\u2019t match, but they do have to work. Making them work together is not as hard as it sounds, because autumn gives you a neutral canvas to experiment on, and we\u2019ve already determined that contrasting is of utmost importance here. So, try pairing traditional tartan with contemporary abstract art, or go for a vintage Saxony or frieze carpet with geometric tapestry pillows, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the surface level<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Autumnal pattern play shouldn\u2019t be just about throwing checkered cushions on top of gingham covers ( although we love those too!). Autumn is also a great time to go for those patterned wallpapers you\u2019ve been thinking about, as well as that mosaic kitchen backsplash you\u2019ve been eyeing for a long time. These patterned surfaces shouldn\u2019t be focal points of the room, but they should be there to work with the rest of your space, grounding it and making it both more stylish and timeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
